The ones from the Russian study (which is actually full of terrible science and the foxes are nowhere near domesticated) are all American red foxes (Vulpes fulva). These are arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus).
Almost no foxes from the Russian study exist outside Russia. I believe there are 12 in the whole of the United States and all of them are owned by the same dodgy place in California. The facility does not like to ship their foxes outside of Russia, and in the extremely rare instance that they do they are always fixed before they are exported to prevent anyone else from being able to breed them.
All pet foxes in the US, both red and arctic, come from native fur farm stock. Most US breeders are either fur farmers trying to make a bit of extra money on the side by selling kits to the pet market, or idiots like the one in Scout's post who buy a a breeding pair for cheap (foxes can be extremely cheap to buy due to being so overbred) and backyard breed them for profit.
